Our roots
The history of the bank
Our bank was founded in 1966 under the name "Darlehenskasse im Bistum Essen eGmbH".
Our founding fathers had a clear mission in mind for the company: providing church organisations with credit and advice on financial matters. As a specialist bank for the Church and its organisations, we are still bound by Christian values today, and make sure that our corporate policy is in line with those values.
We are a cooperative bank. Our members include corporate clients such as hospitals, foundations, religious housing companies, institutions for elderly and disabled people, pension schemes, registered associations and other charitable NGOs – not to mention numerous private clients, including the employees of the aforementioned companies and associations. The bank is open to all individuals who share our approach to business, which is based on Christian social teachings and long-term sustainability.
More and more international institutions are relying on BIB services, both here and abroad. Over the past few years, numerous microfinance institutions and Church organisations in around 60 developing and transforming countries have become loyal BIB customers.
